MY OCT. 21st LIST
"I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation." C.S. Lewis
Today is October 21st. Here are all my current obsessions.
TO LISTEN:
+ THE LITURGIST PODCAST
I can't get enough of this podcast; it's everything my soul craves - open-ended conversation between people who are unafraid of mystery, dissonance, uncertainty, people who seek answers, harmony, honesty but know how to live in the in-between, how to be in process. The episode on homosexuality is what I started with and after that, I decided I would aim to listen to each one, starting with Episode 1: Creativity. Both were phenomenal.
+ THE NORTHERN STATE
The man responsible for this new season of creative pursuits I get to enjoy released a single this week that he invited me to sing on! So fun! I love this song and I love that with these beautiful, yet simple lyrics, Jordie is able to communicate something so profound.
+ HAMILTON SOUNDTRACK
I have been enamored with this musical. And after listening to the podcast I mentioned earlier (the one on creativity), this realization hit me - the compelling nature of Hamilton derives from the fact that Lin-Manuel Miranda's has an insane ability to associate things that you'd never think to associate: american history & hip-hop. I love everything Lin-Manuel is about, and I have been so moved by the story of Hamilton he musicalized and shared with the world. It's seeped into my soul, brought out all these emotions, found its way into my mind with its catchy melodies and thought-provoking truths, and I'm just a huge, huge fan.
+ YOU CAME
MY JAM. I'm always longing for a new Bethel song to fall in love with and when one of my Life Group girls sent this link to me, my heart lit up. Give it a listen and let its truths sink in.
+ PRONOUN
It's so rare that new music captivates me lately, so when someone's sound keeps me wanting more, I'm pretty stoked about it. Cannot wait to hear more by Pronoun. I LOVE.
TO WATCH:
+ CHICAGO HUMANITIES FESTIVAL: INTERVIEW WITH LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA
Going hand-in-hand with my Hamilton obsession is this interview. From his childhood visits to Puerto Rico to his Tony speech on the day of the Orlando Shooting to free-styling to a rapid-fire Q&A session, the entire hour had me hooked.
+ JANE THE VIRGIN
Is "easy-watching" a TV genre (like easy-listening)? If so, this fits that category. This quirky, compelling show returned with Season 3 on Monday. It's so fun and full of surprising twists and turns. 10/10 would recommend.
TO READ:
+ LAUREN GRAMS
THIS GIRL. Writing wizard, I tell you. I found myself scrolling through her Tumblr until 2 a.m. one night, hanging on every word she wrote. I met Lauren through Jordie a while back and we only spent one night together, playing Settlers of Catan and talking about ministry. She asked me a question that changed me: "What have you learned about God from being in ministry?" I had never been asked this and it really got my head spinning. I won't go into the details of how the conversation shifted my internal atmosphere, but I will say this lovely Lauren is intuitive, hella insightful, incredible at writing, and insanely good at taking gorgeous photos of her current hometown.
